چکیده

To reduce the x-ray dose in computerized tomography (CT), many constrained optimization approaches have been proposed aiming at minimizing a regularizing function that measures lack of consistency with some prior knowledge about the object that is being imaged, subject to a (predetermined) level of consistency with the detected attenuation of x-rays. One commonly investigated regularizing function is total variation (TV), while other publications advocate the use of some type of multiscale geometric transform in the definition of the regularizing function, a particular recent choice for this is the shearlet transform. Proponents of the shearlet transform in the regularizing function claim that the reconstructions so obtained are better than those produced using TV for texture preservation (but may be worse for noise reduction). In this paper we report results related to this claim. In our reported experiments using simulated CT data collection of the head, reconstructions whose shearlet transform has a small `1-norm are not more efficacious than reconstructions that have a small TV value. Our experiments for making such comparisons use the recently-developed superiorization methodology for both regularizing functions. Superiorization is an automated procedure for turning an iterative algorithm for producing images that satisfy a primary criterion (such as consistency with the observed measurements) into its superiorized version that will produce results that, according to the primary criterion are as good as those produced by the original algorithm, but in addition are superior to them according to a secondary (regularizing) criterion. The method presented for superiorization involving the `1-norm of the shearlet transform is novel and is quite general: It can be used for any regularizing function that is defined as the `1-norm of a transform specified by the application of a matrix. Because in the previous literature the split Bregman algorithm is used for similar purposes, a section is included comparing the results of the superiorization algorithm with the split Bregman algorithm.

Combined shearlet and TV regularization in sparse-view CT reconstruction

Preclinical in vivo micro computerized tomography suffers from high image noise, due to limitations on total scanning time and the small pixel sizes. A lot of different noise minimization algorithms have already been proposed to reconstruct images acquired in low dose settings. Sparse-view reconstruction amongst others can reduce acquisition dose significantly, by acquiring only a small subset ...

Comparison between Needle Biopsy under Guide of Conventional Computerized Tomography (CCT) and Fluoroscopic Computerized Tomography (FCT) in Abdominal, Mediastinal, Lung, Pelvic, Bone, and Liver Masses

Background and Objective: Computerized tomography and fluoroscopic computerized tomography are amongst the methods used for guiding needle biopsy processes; however, fluoroscopic computerized tomography demonstrates the images during the process of biopsy. This study aims to compare and contrast the success of biopsy under guide...

Gorham’s Disease of the Maxilla and Mandible With Distinctive Cone Beam Computerized Tomographic Features

Gorham’s disease is a rare and atypical disorder epitomized by progressive osteolysis of bone with eventual total disappearance of bone. The etiology is poorly understood with variable clinical presentation. Most times it is initially misdiagnosed as temporomandibular joint dysfunction, periodontal disease or odontogenic tumors clinically and radiographical...

Comparison of Cone Beam Computerized Tomography and Phosphor Storage Plate in Detecting Artificial Buccal Recurrent Caries

Introduction Recurrent or secondary caries develops at the margin of restorations and causes restorative failure. We conducted this study to compare the performance of Phosphor Storage Plate (PSP) and Cone Beam Computed Tomography (CBCT) scan in detecting buccal recurrent caries under amalgam and composite resin restorations. Materials and Methods Class V cavities were prepared on the buccal...
